Through a painstaking step by step process, a giclée reproduction is made directly from the original oil painting by a professional printmaker.
Capturing and Proofing the Image
First, a digital image is created from the original painting using a large format camera with a 1000 megadot camera back. Then the print maker runs a small test print on canvas. Next, the artist meets with the printer to adjust and approve the image in order to ensure color fidelity. After final adjustments, the color settings are locked in, guaranteeing that all giclée prints will be identical..
Printing and Coating the Canvas
The size of the final canvas prints can sometimes be reduced or enlarged to individual client requirements. The actual printing on canvas is performed using an Iris drum printer which is an elaborate, molten ink-jet reproduction machine. The inks used in the giclée priniting process are designed to last indefinitely. Before the giclée prints are finished, the printer gives them a special UV coating to increase longevity. Once thoroughly dried, the prints are delivered to the artist.
Finishing and Framing
Each print is numbered and signed by the artist. A giclée print on canvas may be stretched and framed similar to an oil painting or it may be matted and framed under glass as a fine art print.
